IRA 401K Rollover
Save your retirement dreams with an IRA or 401K rollover
Why let your retirement dreams go down the tubes with the Dow when you can keep them alive with an IRA rollover? Don’t let somebody you never met fritter away your hard-earned money on investments you would never make.
With a self-directed IRA — commonly called a Gold IRA, these days — your assets are held in a secure depository by a federally regulated custodial firm, and you manage them as you see fit. And your portfolio can include a broad range of non-traditional investments including:
- Private placements
- Real estate
- Deeds of trust
- Precious metal bullion
If you are still employed where your 401K account originated, you probably won’t be able to roll it over. However, if you are unhappy with how your account is being managed, you can divert some or all of your future 401K contributions into a new self-directed IRA.
The nuts and bolts of rolling over an IRA
There are two ways to move funds from an existing account into your new self-directed IRA: rollover and direct transfer.
- When you roll over an IRA, you are actually taking a distribution from one account and depositing it into another. All distributions are reported to the IRS, and if you fail to redeposit the funds within sixty days, you will be taxed on the distribution. In addition, you are not allowed to roll over any more assets from the same account or roll over assets in your new account for at least twelve months.
- Transfers are an entirely different story. Because they aren’t considered a distribution, the government places no restrictions on the number or frequency of transfers, and the transactions are not reportable to the IRS.
